A level 1 was issued for S Greece, S Turkey and Cyprus mainly for excessive precipitation.

SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION

A long-wave trough has destabilized the environment of the eastern Mediterranean, while short-wave troughs are drifting along the leading edge of a strong ridge that has developed in W Europe. Steep mid-level lapse rates in SE Greece, S Turkey, and Cyprus create a few hundreds of J/kg CAPE but shear is not strong, apart from SE Turkey. Storms will continue to develop in this region on Tuesday 24/12 and the main threat will be excessive precipitation. A few small hail events are also expected and even a few tornadoes given the strong LLS in SE Turkey.

Some storms may also develop in western Europe, especially in Belgium and W Germany, as a short-wave trough will provide lift to weakly unstable air masses. A few strong gusts may become severe but mostly the phenomena will be non-convective.
