SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION

Rather stable conditions are forecast over much of Europe in the cold, dry, continental airmass. With the deep low pressure system over the Atlantic, a maritime arctic airmass will advect behind the cold front with bands of showers / weak thunderstorms thanks to steep lapse rates exceeding 7 K/km. Strong lower tropospheric flow (850 hPa flow between 25 - 35 m/s) in steep pressure gradient will result in a swath of severe non-convective wind gusts. Wind gusts may be slightly enhanced in convection, but it is not expected that it would contribute significantly to gust strength and thus, Lvl 1 is not warranted. Weak thunderstorms are also forecast over the parts of the Mediterranean with a large scale low pressure system at mid to upper troposphere.
