3.3 Pattern recognition

Severe convection may take place wherever the basic ingredients for the initiation and development of severe thunderstorms come together regardless of for example latitude or the time of year. In certain areas those ingredients may simply come together more frequently. Land-sea distribution, mountain ranges and other factors affect the orientation of the most typical severe convection weather pattern in each geographical area. For example, in Finland the most intense thunderstorms take place under strong southerly or southeasterly upper flow whereas Central Europe a southwesterly flow is more common.
