SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION

An unseasonably extensive and pronounced high pressure system is covering much of W, Central and SE Europe during the forecast period. To the north of it, a sharp short-wave trough will cross Scandinavia and quickly translate towards Russia, associated with a deep low pressure system. Weakly electrified DMC may occur along and behind the cold front.

To the south, DMC will be associated with cold air aloft that is overspreading the warm sea over the S Mediterranean. Surface cyclogenesis is forecast south of the forecast area. Over Iberia and W Mediterranean, isolated to scattered DMC will be associated with a weakly defined cyclonic vortex at mid-troposphere.
