SYNOPSIS and DISCUSSION

An active weather pattern is ongoing over much of Europe, an exception being the South Mediterranean and Iberia. A trough will quickly progress in strong NW-ly flow from NW France towards Central Italy. Associated cold front may be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, especially over NW Italy, where Alps will block the passage of cold airmass near the surface. Due to the quick cooling aloft, steep lapse rates will result, but CAPE values should stay mostly around 100 - 200 J/kg. Despite the presence of strong DLS, severe weather threat will be too low to warrant a Lvl 1. Another zone of steep lapse rates will be over the Norwegian Sea, where the main limiting factor for lightning will be meager low-level moisture, with mixing ratios around or below 3g/kg.
