SYNOPSIS

The long-wave trough that affected most parts of Europe during the last days moves eastward and a westerly flow evolves over western Europe. This is associated with the advection of warmer and rather moist maritime air into western and central Europe. Ahead of the cold front of the main surface low, a low-level jet is forecast over Portugal. Along the cold front, mostly stratiform precipitation is forecast on Thursday. In the evening and night hours, an approaching mid-level trough will be associated with steepening lapse rates and a decreasing equilibrium level temperature. Embedded thunderstorms may evolve along the cold front during the night that will enhance the potential of local flooding associated with the stratiform rain. Although the low-level vertical wind shear is expected to be strong, the potential of tornadoes is forecast to be too low for a categorical risk level.
